The practice has specialist knowledge of theatre, performance spaces and art gallery design. This work continues in current development projects, helping clients use performance spaces effectively and develop their economic operation.

The MAC arts centre combines large contemporary art spaces with the theatre and performance spaces. In the main 350 seat theatre the challenge was to provide a flexible seating ‘black box’ space but achieve an intimacy and character for its primary use as theatre. The perception for actors and performer was an important consideration and the seating spaces can adapt and be screened for smaller crowds.

The asymmetric layout uses dark but natural and rich materials. A series of bespoke galleries around the inner area of retracting seats and a small pit allows improved sight lines and intimacy but has been accomplished without expensive systems. The layout also allows a number of accessible seat options well integrated in the collective body of the audience.

The MAC art spaces have been designed to National Museums and Galleries standards and provide some of the largest bespoke modern galleries in the region.
